Kevin Smith has been Principal
Bass Trombone of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for
the last 18 years. Prior to this Kevin studied at the
Royal Academy of Music and then spent several years
working with orchestras such as the London Symphony, BBC
Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, the
Philharmonia and the Orchestra of The Royal Opera House.
He has also worked in the lighter side of music backing Sammy
Davis Jnr, Liza Minnelli, Shirley MacLaine, Whitney
Houston, Barry White and Harry Connick Jnr.
Kevin started conducting in 2004 when he was asked to take
over the St Aldhelms’ Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted
several orchestras including the Wessex Youth Orchestra
and Dorset Youth Orchestra and now also conducts the
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in its education project
‘Rusty and Not So Rusty’ musicians.
Kevin was born and raised in the Salvation Army at the
Chalk Farm Corps where he played euphonium and trombone
until his mid-twenties.
